← Back to the Wall of HeroesThe Shield: Representatives Holding the Line
Elected officials pulling for the people, fighting extraction, and demanding accountability from within the halls of power.

Sen. Bernie Sanders
For over 40 years, Bernie Sanders has fought the same fight — against economic inequality, against the billionaire class, against the extraction economy — when it was unpopular, unelectable, and politically suicidal. He refused corporate PAC money before anyone else did. He made democratic socialism a viable word in American politics.
""For four decades of saying the same thing, because the same thing has always been true.""

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez
A former bartender from the Bronx who unseated one of the most powerful Democrats in Congress. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez brought working-class fury directly into the halls of power, refused corporate PAC money, and used her platform to hold both parties accountable. She demonstrated that you don't need generational wealth or institutional blessing to fight.
""For proving that the halls of power have room for someone who actually knows what it's like to struggle.""

Rep. Jasmine Crockett
In Congressional hearings where decorum is used as a weapon against accountability, Rep. Jasmine Crockett delivered razor-sharp, unapologetic truth directly to those attempting to dismantle democratic norms. She refused to be silenced, talked over, or diminished.
""For refusing to let bad faith hide behind parliamentary procedure.""

Rep. Melanie Stansbury
New Mexico Representative Melanie Stansbury has fought for environmental justice, water rights, and community health in one of the most resource-exploited states in the country, prioritizing the land and the people over the corporations extracting from both.
""For defending the land and the people when the extractors came for both.""

Sen. Elizabeth Warren
Elizabeth Warren designed and built the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau from scratch — the single most effective structural defense the American working class has against predatory lending, fraud, and financial extraction. Wall Street has tried to destroy it ever since, which tells you everything.
""For building the one institution that Wall Street can't stop trying to kill.""

Rep. Al Green
Rep. Al Green was among the first members of Congress to call for impeachment proceedings, standing on the House floor to demand accountability when most of his colleagues were still calculating the political risk. He was early, he was persistent, and he was right.
""For moral clarity before it was popular, and consistency after it stopped being.""

Sen. Adam Schiff
As lead impeachment manager, Adam Schiff prosecuted the case for constitutional accountability against a sitting president, enduring unprecedented political retaliation, death threats, and a formal censure by partisan colleagues. He continued the work regardless.
""For standing in the well of the Senate and telling the truth when the truth had a price on its head.""

Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse
Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse has delivered over 300 speeches on the Senate floor methodically exposing the dark money networks, shell corporations, and anonymous donors capturing the Supreme Court and American institutions. His series, "The Scheme," is the most comprehensive public accounting of structural judicial corruption in modern American history.
""For 300 speeches no one was supposed to hear, mapping the architecture of corruption in real time.""

Sen. Elissa Slotkin
In November 2025, Slotkin and five other lawmakers with military and intelligence backgrounds released a short video reminding troops that the law says they can, and must, refuse illegal orders. The President called it "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" Senate leaders asked for added security for her, and in January 2026 she said a federal investigation had been opened against her. She kept speaking.
"For reminding the troops of their oath when it put her own safety on the line."
Institutional Guardians
Those who held the line from inside the system, ensuring the survival of democratic and human institutions.

General Mark Milley
During the precarious transition period of late 2020 and January 2021, General Mark Milley, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, took extraordinary measures to prevent unauthorized military action and nuclear conflict. He placed himself between constitutional order and chaos, ensuring that the chain of command held.
""For holding the nuclear codes steady when the hand above him was shaking.""

General John Kelly
Four-star Marine General John Kelly served as White House Chief of Staff and then broke ranks to publicly warn the American people, on the record, that the Commander-in-Chief held authoritarian and fascist views and had disparaged fallen service members. He is a Gold Star father.
""For a Gold Star father telling the truth about the man who dishonored his son's sacrifice.""

General James Mattis
General James Mattis resigned as Secretary of Defense in December 2018 in protest over the abandonment of Kurdish allies in Syria — allies who had fought and died alongside American forces. He published an open letter warning that the intentional division of the American people was a threat to the Republic.
""For resigning on principle and putting it in writing, so history would have the receipt.""

Major Jason Watson
On July 2, 2026, Active-Duty Major Jason Watson stood on the steps of the U.S. Capitol in full uniform and called for the impeachment, conviction, and removal of the President and Vice President. Arrested and charged under the UCMJ, he risked a 20-year career, his pension, and up to 20 years in military prison for an act of unwavering constitutional conscience.
""For risking his freedom to fulfill his oath to the Constitution when the chain of command had compromised it.""

General Randy George
Ousted from his post as Army Chief of Staff by the Secretary of Defense during a sweeping purge of military leadership. Rather than leave quietly, he used his final official communication to tell the entire Army command structure that the soldiers "deserve courageous leaders of character" — a direct, public shot at the moral bankruptcy of the administration firing him.
""For using his execution as a platform to draw a moral line in the sand.""
